The idyllic beaches and vibrant marine life of Kenya's coast have long been the foundation of a vital tourism economy, one increasingly managed by local women entrepreneurs. However, the escalating impacts of climate change are now directly threatening their businesses and cultural heritage.
Rising sea levels and coastal erosion are visibly consuming shorelines, damaging small hotels, restaurants, and craft markets operated by women. More frequent and severe storms disrupt operations and deter visitors, leading to significant income loss. Coral bleaching, driven by warmer ocean temperatures, degrades the snorkeling and diving attractions that draw tourists to the region.
Yet for these women, the crisis runs deeper than economics. Their connection to the coast is ancestral, intertwined with community and identity. The loss of natural landmarks and traditional gathering places represents an erosion of their way of life. Many express a profound grief as they watch the environment that sustained their families for generations change irrevocably.
Despite the challenges, there is a movement toward adaptation. Women's groups are exploring sustainable tourism models and diversifying income through activities less vulnerable to weather patterns. Their resilience highlights a dual struggle: fighting for economic survival while safeguarding a cultural legacy threatened by a changing climate.
